On Saturday, May 12th, the Ohio Junior High State Track and Field Championships will be held in Lancaster, Ohio. The top 16 middle school track athletes in each event from around the state will battle it out for a chance to be crowned a state champion. Three Bellaire junior high track team members have found themselves among the best of the best and will take part in the action. 8th graders Katelyn Hart, Nick Materkoski, and Colt Sechrest will represent Bellaire Middle School in field event competitions. Hart and Sechrest will be throwing the discus while Materkoski will toss both the shot put and discus. All three have a had very successful season to date and could find themselves in the hunt for individual titles.
Hart has set the school record for discus this year with a heave of 110 feet 2 inches. She also won the discus and broke meet records at six invitationals this past spring. Sechrest enters the discus event with a throw of 173 feet 3 inches. This mark also set a school record and helped him capture six invitational titles and five meet records. Materkoski heads to the circles with throws of 150 feet in the disc and 42 feet 5 inches in the shot which lead him to several top finishes in invitationals. Heading into Saturday's competition, Hart is ranked second just 9 inches out of first, Sechrest is ranked first and leads the field by over 23 feet, and Materkoski heads into the discus ranked third just 5 inches out of 2nd place. Materkoski is also ranked 15th in the shot put.
